It’s certainly a scotcher in the Dallas/Fort Worth area already, and unfortunately, the hottest days are still ahead of us. In southern states, like Texas, it's important to stay hydrated, especially if you decide to take a trip to one of the many parks, trails, or other outdoor recreational opportunities that the DFW Metroplex has to offer.

With the heat we've already been experiencing in June, dehydration can quickly become a serious medical emergency, and most people do not realize that your body's reaction can happen in the blink of any eye. Other than drinking plenty of water, here is how you can avoid dehydration while enjoying the great outdoors, courtesy of the premier apartments near UT Dallas!

1. Avoid being in direct sunlight for extended periods of time. Direct sunlight increases sweating, which helps your body cool itself down. By sweating, you are experiencing water loss that contributes to dehydration.
2. Don’t drink alcohol during the hottest part of the day, which is anywhere between 10 AM and 4 PM. Alcohol eliminates water from the body and can increase the risk of dehydration. If you do drink alcohol, have two glasses of fresh, cool water for every one alcoholic beverage.
3. Avoid caffeinated beverages. Like alcohol, caffeine does not help to keep your body hydrated. While a cold soda or iced latte sounds refreshing for your outdoor excursion, it actually significantly increases your dehydration risk.
4. Snack on fruits and veggies with high water content. Some excellent choices that are easy to incorporate in summer snacks or meals include watermelon, grapefruit, oranges, strawberries, tomatoes, and cucumber.
